We always recommend that for every shopper a set of credit checks are completed. As with any person presenting a credit card for payment at a store a certain amount of due caution and process needs to be followed. On the internet, as a store owner you are at a distinct disadvantage because you cannot physically see the shopper and their environs. However you have the comfort of distance and not having to face down an irate customer in front of other customers.
Some Checks you should perform before you ship.
- Check the Ip address of the shopper matches the card address location. This is not fool proof as shoppers can operate from work , home or really any computer they wish.
- If the product is to be shipped to another address other than the billing address look for proof of identity. Acceptable forms of proof of identity are the top portion of their most recent credit card bill, utility bill or drivers license.
- If the product is to be shipped to another address other than the shipping address and the email address is a 'free' email account then you need to treat with extreme caution
- If there is a caution on the card from the credit card company make sure and do a phone call to the card holder to make sure they know their card is being used. Keep a log of the security checks you have done. Payment disputes later will need this log.
- All credit checks should be presented to the customer as random and part of identity theft provention measures.
- There are some countries in the world you simply should not ship to because of high incidents of fraud.
- Beware of customers who get irate when they are asked for identity proof and pressurize you into sending the goods. This usually is a bad omen. Its not what normal people who have nothing to fear do.
- Remember you are the shipper and you are in control of whether the customer get s the goods or not. If the goods are for a deadline like a wedding , birthday, remember it is the custoemr who is missing the deadline not you.
- Beware of emails with bad english.
- Check with you credit card company the acceptable numebr of checks you need to do before they will honor a transaction.
- Fraud transactions take about 6 weeks to surface so the goods are usually shipped at this stage and the shopper is well gone, if they have any sense.
- Notify all credit card fraud shipping addresses to the local police in the recipients location.
